Tucked into the heart of Hanoi, the Old Quarter is like a precious gem marked by time. With a history stretching back hundreds of years to the Ly and Tran dynasties, it is a living museum full of fascinating stories. Join hanoinew for a stroll along its narrow streets, past old houses with moss-covered walls and finely carved wooden doors. You will feel both the breath of the past and the bustle of the present.

Each street here is tied to an old trade: Hang Bac glitters with silver, Hang Ma blazes with paper goods, Hang Duong smells of candied fruit. Stop at a café in a small upstairs room overlooking the street, or enjoy a hot bowl of pho or a plate of bun cha with true Hanoi flavour. The Old Quarter is at its best when you slow down and let yourself fall into its rhythm.

Getting there

Walk or take a cyclo; cars should drop off and pick up on the larger surrounding streets.

Tips

Wear comfortable shoes and keep your bag in front of you in crowded spots.
