St. Joseph’s Cathedral

Two soaring bell towers and grey stone walls weathered by time – St. Joseph’s Cathedral looks like a European painting in the middle of the Old Quarter.

  • Time needed: 30 minutes
  • Best time: Morning or when the lights come on

Have you ever stood in front of the cathedral as the bells ring out and felt time slow down? Built in the late 19th century in Gothic style, it has an old-world beauty with high vaults, stained-glass windows and finely detailed architecture. It is one of Hanoi’s most familiar photo backdrops.

Around the cathedral are small streets full of charming cafés and the famous pavement lemon-tea stalls. In the evening, when the warm lights come on, sit with a glass of iced lemon tea, watch the crowds go by and feel the youthful pulse of the capital. The cathedral is where the quiet of the past meets the energy of the present.
