West Lake

Looking for Hanoi’s most beautiful sunset? Head to West Lake – the largest lake in the capital, where the water turns gold every evening.

  • Time needed: 2–3 hours
  • Best time: Sunset
  • Hours & tickets: Check before you go

Perhaps nowhere in Hanoi feels as relaxing as West Lake at dusk. A breeze blows off the water, the sunset turns the sky gold and lakeside cafés begin to light up. Cycle around the lake, visit Tran Quoc Pagoda – one of Hanoi’s oldest – or the sacred Tay Ho Temple.

Don’t miss crispy West Lake shrimp cakes (bánh tôm) or a plate of hot snails by the water – dishes tied to the memories of generations of Hanoians. West Lake is for slow afternoons, when you just want to sit back and watch the city drift by.

Getting there

About 15 minutes by car from the Old Quarter.

Tips

Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to get a good seat.
