Hoan Kiem Lake
Heart of Hanoi

Hoan Kiem Lake

Where does Hanoi begin in your mind? For many, it is the jade-green Hoan Kiem Lake, the quiet Turtle Tower and the bright red The Huc Bridge.

  • Time needed: 1–2 hours strolling around the lake
  • Best time: Early morning or weekend evenings
  • Hours & tickets: Check before you go

Have you ever sat by Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn, when a thin mist still hangs over the water and the first Hanoians start their morning exercise? The lake is the heart of the capital, home to the legend of King Le returning the magic sword and witness to the city’s many changes. Walk around it and you will pass willows trailing over the water, Turtle Tower in the middle of the lake, the arched The Huc Bridge and Ngoc Son Temple tucked beneath ancient trees.

When the city lights up, the lake takes on a completely different glow. On weekend evenings the streets around it become a pedestrian zone, full of street music, folk games and people strolling at an easy pace. From here, a few minutes on foot take you into the Old Quarter, St. Joseph’s Cathedral or the Opera House. Hoan Kiem Lake is the perfect starting point for any journey through Hanoi.

Getting there

If you are staying in the Old Quarter, it is just a few minutes’ walk. From Noi Bai Airport it takes about 45–60 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Tips

From Friday to Sunday evening the streets around the lake are closed to traffic for the pedestrian zone, so arrange to be picked up at the end of the street. For beautiful, quiet photos, come at sunrise.
