One Pillar Pagoda

Like a lotus rising from a pond, the One Pillar Pagoda is one of Hanoi’s most unique symbols.

  • Time needed: 20–30 minutes
  • Best time: Morning
  • Hours & tickets: Check before you go

Can you believe a pagoda could stand on a single stone pillar? Built in the Ly dynasty, the One Pillar Pagoda is shaped like a lotus blooming on the water – a symbol of purity in Vietnamese culture. Legend has it that King Ly Thai Tong dreamed of the Goddess of Mercy seated on a lotus throne and had the pagoda built after that dream.

Small as it is, the pagoda holds a long history and sits within the peaceful Ba Dinh historical complex. Visit and you will feel a rare stillness in the middle of the busy capital.

Getting there

A few minutes’ walk from the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

Tips

Combine it with a morning around Ba Dinh; dress respectfully when entering the pagoda.
